Size and Space in Multimodal Assignments

The Universal Design priniciple of size and space for approach means that resources and environment for multimodal composing allow for “reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture, or mobility.” According to the Center for Universal Design, this means making “reach to all components comfortable for any seated or standing user,” “accommodat[ing] variations” and providing “adequate space for the use of assistive devices or personal assistance.” For multimodal assignments, this could mean:

• Having classes and workshops in flexible spaces that allow students to find a comfortable position for composing;
• Having classes and workshops in spacious rooms that allow for ease of mobility in and out of the classroom;
• Having flexible material resources that can move with users (e.g. desks that adjust to heights, chairs and desks that can be moved).
• Having desks and chairs that accommodate students and equipment of various sizes and needs
• Having flexible composing tools (including assistive technologies, as needed) that adjust to the user’s body and/or needs.
